The Nuclear Power Institute (NPI) has issued a warning that illicit mining, commonly known as galamsey, will have an impact on Ghana's capacity to utilize the potential of its untapped hydropower resources.

The NPI estimates that the nation has utilized around 64% of its hydropower potential.

At a press briefing on the progress of Ghana's nuclear power program, Dr. Archibald Buah-Kwofie, deputy director of the NPI, emphasized the importance of the nation diversifying its energy supply.

We have been utilizing roughly 64% of our hydro potentials, but we are also conscious of the galamsey scenario, he continued. Because the majority of our water bodies have been depleted, using the 36% that are still available will be significantly more challenging.

In the meantime, Dr. Stephen Yamoah, Executive Director of Nuclear Power Ghana, is optimistic that by year's end, a vendor would be found to build the nation's first nuclear power plant.

"We are currently examining the submissions; after that, the state process will be followed. According to him, "We will work with the Ministry, and through the Ministry, it will return to the cabinet for their consideration.
