Angela Bassett to receive honorary Oscar

The time has come for Angela Bassett to own her own Oscar statuette.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) made the announcement on Monday that the two-time nominee will receive an honorary Oscar at the 2023 Governors Awards.

Bassett left a mark on the world in 2023 when she was designated for best supporting entertainer for her strong presentation as Sovereign Ramonda in the 2022 “Dark Puma” continuation “Dark Jaguar: Wakanda for all time.

She became the first woman, the first actor of color, and the first actor from Marvel Studios to be nominated for a performance in a comic book adaptation thanks to the nod.

Her most memorable designation came during the 90s when she procured a best entertainer gesture for her depiction of the late stone and soul symbol Tina Turner in the 1993 Turner biopic “What’s Affection Have to Do With It?

In the press release that was issued on Monday, Academy president Janet Yang stated, “Across her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting.”

Bassett has appeared in numerous other well-known films, including “Boyz n the Hood,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” “Malcolm X,” and “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.” Fallout, and has appeared as Queen Ramonda in three Marvel movies.

She has made appearances on shows like “American Horror Story,” “ER,” and “9-1-1,” among others, throughout her decades-long career in television.

For the annual Governors Awards, honorary Oscar statuettes are given to a select few individuals based on votes cast by the Academy’s Board of Governors. This is done to recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves and made exceptional contributions to the film industry.

Mel Brooks, Carol Littleton, and Sundance Institute executive Michelle Statter will each receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2023.

On November 18, the Governors Awards for 2023 will be presented in Los Angeles.
